Designer's Statement of Style

Well, me, myself, personally... I will most likely wear this Classic White One Barber shirt with a dark pair of pants or jeans, and a fresh pair of white Reebok Classics, white Shell Toe Adidas, or white Air Force One Nike's with a black Swoosh, and no accessories. But I'm more interested in seeing how others choose to style it. I have some ideas about what they might do with it, but I'd rather sit back and watch quietly, and see what people do with this (sort of) blank canvas. -Éric L Farrell

Designer's Statement of Quality

In line with the traditional white barber's jacket, the One Barber Classic White t-shirt is about longstanding quality, reliability, and simplicity.

Los Angeles clippers. While on my One Barber Shop Tour around Los Angeles (that's what I mean by "Los Angeles clippers"), I popped into a store to buy a new pair of jeans, and bought a white Champion® t-shirt on a whim to compliment them.

Thereafter, every time I put on that shirt, I was taken back to my childhood, by the way that shirt wore me. When a shirt makes you look down at it while it's wearing you, you know you've found something.

Sponge Bob. This Classic White is the right fit and feel. I find other tshirts to be too wide and short for a particular size (disproportionate), and sizing up or down only makes things worse. I'm not Sponge Bob. I don't have a square body; I have a rectangle. Then there are the sleeves... too short, too long, or too wide and baggy, flailing aimlessly. I'm not that picky; I could handle baggy long sleeves, but baggy short sleeves? Nah, son. I need sleeves, not wings. I'm a regular guy, and like most guys, I don't have Arnold's biceps to fill those out.

Growing up on the outskirts of DC in Woodbridge (nicknamed "Hoodbridge" - only we are allowed to call it that. You can call it The Bridge.), while grooving to rap and go-go music, Champion t-shirts were our top choice. And here I was, now being reminded of the quality and old world reliability of the shirt we all loved, and it was still the exact same as years ago in my teens.

My vow. After years of rocking my new white Champion T, and seeing how it stayed true, no matter how many times I washed and wore it, I gained a new respect for the brand. Unfortunately, as a creative entrepreneur and whatever ever else I am, I ended up vowing that the next new clothing item I purchased or wore would have my own name on it.

Work shirts. Then I remembered that champion shirt. Then I remembered my vow. I had to wear my own brand, not someone else's who I don't know, so no more Champion shirts for me. Unless...! Unless I could find a loophole! So I checked with my soon-to-be supplier, and was met with good news. I printed my very first One Barber shirts on white Champion T's. Those were my first work shirts, while touring and reciting my barber poem in barbershops. But I would need to improve my print quality before releasing shirts for others to buy and wear.

Quality testing. After testing the quality over a short time, I released a brand new design of the One Barber shirt, which was the first release. I wanted to give my barber customers the same feeling I felt when I put on that white Champion T. When they got them, they loved them as much as I did. They said they wore them on their nights out on the town, to the club, and other such occasions when people usually want to look their best.

In a time of designed obsolescence, when many products are now designed to quickly wear out, fall apart, and need replacing, to the benefit of the seller, these shirts are a holdover from the past. I raised a pretty big fuss for a few days when my supplier informed me that they could not meet my next order of Champion shirts, because there was not enough supply. So I called up Champion and pressed them, until I was informed that shortage went all the way down to the factory in Haiti. So I didn't order any shirts.

Pajama T's. My supplier said they'd send me a comparable shirt to try out, but I shut them down, because I wasn't convinced, and wasn't trying to hear it. I need what I need. And what I needed was to deliver quality, and shirts that fit right, that people actually want to wear, not just look at. My many disappointments... I've had way too many pajama T's from different organizations, and family reunions, and events. A pajama T, is a regular t-shirt that gets demoted to being sleepwear, never to be worn outside of the house, because it just looked and felt awkward and it's just not right to do that to yourself, except maybe on Don't-care day.

The switch. So after much deliberation, I eventually broke down and called my supplier back and allowed them to send me the comparable shirt to test out. I scrutinized it next to my beloved Champion shirts, wore and washed it repeatedly, and even compared when and how the dye faded in the sun. I should have won an award for my quality testing. I wanted to complain, because I was still upset, because I had a good thing going. But the only complaint I could come up with was that there was no Champion "c" on the sleeve. I actually never found any other difference, because there was no other difference. So I went ahead and gambled on an order of c-less shirts, for some of my other customers, and they loved them!

Their satisfaction was my reward for my quality testing, I suppose. Now I've worn the same five shirts for years, and washed and dried them weekly, sometimes hang drying, but often in the dryer, and they have all held up perfectly over the years, and still get me compliments. After some years, I did manage to put a hole in the underarm stitching, because I don't know how to properly take off a shirt, but it's not visible, and still doesn't spread, so it's just a nice vent for summer days.

Take it off. I had six of those shirts, but I met one guy, who didn't want to hear that I was sold out, so he told me to take off the shirt I was wearing and sell it to him. I appreciated his gall, so I took it off right there in his shop and sold it to him, then went to my car and put on another one. So now I have five of those shirts. I wear them alongside the Champion branded shirts, and I can never tell the difference, except when I check for the "c."

Represent. Now about this new Classic White... Many of my customers don't necessarily want a big image on the front or back of their shirt, so I kept it simple. The Classic White One Barber shirt doesn't have the poem on it, but it doesn't need to. Like that simple Champion "c," the people who wear this new Classic White, know what One Barber represents. And you can never go wrong with classic. I look forward to sharing my experience with this shirt's quality with others, because I know it will not let them down. And that's enough for me.for now.
